Cosmetic covers for lower-limb prostheses.
نویسنده
چکیده
A soft cosmetic cover for use with modular endoskeletal prostheses is discussed. The reverse molding procedure, which is used to make a mirror image of a unilateral amputee's remaining anatomical limb, is described . This process reduces the time required to fabricate a cosmetic cover since no mechanical or artistic shaping is required to match the prosthetic limb to the anatomical limb. The resultant cover is composed of a lightweight (3 lb.lcu . ft .) open-celled urethane foam which produces its own high-density, scuff resistant, and water resistant skin . This cosmetic cover greatly facilitates fabrication and increases efficiency in the production of modular endoskeletal prostheses for lower-limb amputees .

Colorimetric analysis of silicone cosmetic prostheses for upper-limb amputees.
Every year the Italian National Insurance Institute of Accidents on Work (INAIL) Prosthesis Centre manufactures more than 300 silicone cosmetic upper-limb prostheses that are aesthetically similar to patients' missing limbs; however, the prostheses have the following drawbacks: subjectivity in color choice, high production costs, and long time frames for patient tests and prosthesis production....
متن کاملAn evaluation of the use made of cosmetic and functional prostheses by unilateral upper limb amputees.
There is currently a distinction drawn between a prosthesis considered to be provided for purely cosmetic reasons and a functional prosthesis provided to enable the amputee to achieve basic hand function. Using video analysis the study reported in this paper demonstrates that for non-manipulative actions cosmetic prostheses are actively used in the performance of everyday tasks as frequently as...
متن کاملEvidence Note Differences in Myoelectric and Body-Powered Upper Limb Prostheses
Key Points Research comparing upper limb prostheses is limited. Body-powered prostheses have demonstrated advantages in durability, training time, user feedback and frequency of adjustment and maintenance. Myoelectric prostheses have been shown to provide a cosmetic advantage, are more accepted for light intensity work, and may positively affect phantom limb pain when used actively. Bod...
متن کاملThe development of artificial limbs for lower limbs.
This project represents a continuous effort of Mauch Laboratories toward the improvement of artificial limbs, particularly for the lower limbs. Work on five items has been underway : A semivoluntary Swing and Stance Control knee mechanism (S-N-S System), an automatically controlled Tri-axial Ankle mechanism, a fully Voluntarily Actuated Swing and Stance Control knee mechanism, a mechanical low-...
متن کاملComparison of mechanical properties of silicone and PVC (polyvinylchloride) cosmetic gloves for articulating hand prostheses.
Current articulating electric and body-powered hands have a lower pinch force (15-34 N) than electric hands with stiff fingers (55-100 N). The cosmetic glove, which covers a hand prosthesis, negatively affects the mechanical efficiency of a prosthesis. The goal of this study is to mechanically compare polyvinylchloride (PVC) and silicone cosmetic gloves and quantify the stiffness of the finger ...
